What is Funded-Loan Attribution

Funded-loan attribution is the measurement practice of connecting a funded loan to the marketing that produced it. It follows a borrower from the ad, email, or search that brought them in, through the application in the loan origination system, to the funded loan booked in the core. Unlike application counts or click-based conversions, it shows which campaigns grow loan balances, what each funded loan cost, and where approved applications are lost before funding. It depends on campaign source being captured with the application and on LOS or core results being matched back to marketing on a regular schedule.

Why Applications Aren't Enough

Lending teams and marketing teams often measure different things. Marketing reports clicks, leads, and applications. Lending reports approvals, funded loans, and balances. When the two reports don't connect, marketing can't show which campaigns produced the loans lending booked.

  • Declined applications add cost and no balance. A campaign reaching the wrong borrowers can look productive until approval rates are checked.
  • Approved loans that never fund are often lost to slow follow-up or second thoughts, and marketing can help recover them.
  • Indirect loans arrive through dealer partners rather than campaigns, and reporting them separately keeps marketing's results accurate.

Building the Attribution Chain

  1. Capture source at the click with UTM parameters and ad click IDs.
  2. Carry that source into the application in the LOS, using the platform's source or referral fields.
  3. Export application status from the LOS on a schedule, keyed by application ID, into the CRM or reporting tool.
  4. Confirm funding against the core so the report matches what finance sees.
  5. Join the results to spend by campaign and product.

Email and digital banking campaigns can be matched the same way, using the member's record and a defined window after the message.

Choosing a Model and Reporting Results

Most loan decisions involve several touches, such as a search, a rate-page visit, an email, and a reminder. Credit unions don't need complex models to start.

  • Use last-click or first-click as a consistent baseline, and move to multi-touch attribution once volume supports it.
  • Set a conversion window by product: shorter for personal and auto loans, longer for home equity and mortgages.
  • Report applications, approvals, funded loans, funded balances, and cost per funded loan by channel and product, in the same format every month.
  • Send funded loans back to ad platforms through offline conversion import so optimization uses the same definition as the report.

Over time this reporting shows which channels deserve more budget and gives the lending team and the ALCO numbers they recognize. See also loan growth campaigns.
